Native to North America and northeastern Japan, maitake occurs as grayish-brown clusters on trees and dead wood, and can reach a weight of up to 20 kg. Due to their scarcity in the wild, our maitake mushrooms are sustainably grown in greenhouses, at controlled temperatures and without shade, to maximize their potency and purity.

Maitake (Grifola frondosa) from New Roots Herbal is a medicinal hot-water extract standardized to contain 40% polysaccharides (400 mg per capsule). Hot-water extraction is essential for a high-quality, effective mushroom product, and is the traditional method of extraction in Asia. In the whole mushroom, the polysaccharides are bound by indigestible cell walls composed of chitin; the chitin must be dissolved in hot water to gently release its medicinal compounds, the fungal polysaccharides. Conversely, grinding the fungus can cause damage to the long-chain polysaccharides and fails to remove the indigestible chitin (fiber), limiting the amount of therapeutic constituents that can be adapted per capsule. Standardization ensures that the final product contains a constant amount of polysaccharides to enable delivery of a therapeutic dose.

Therapeutically active compounds include two beta-glucans that activate the immune system response and are excellent as complementary therapy during cancer treatment. Maitake has also been shown to induce ovulation in women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome.
