Fenugreek is one of the oldest medicinal plants, originating in India and northern Africa. The leaves and seeds of fenugreek, which take the form of a long pod when ripe, are used to prepare extracts or powders for medicinal purposes.
Fenugreek has been found to contain 4-hydroxy-isoleucine (4-OH-Ile), fat, diosgenin, iron, phenolic acids, proteins and protodioscin.
In Indian and Chinese medicine, fenugreek has long been used to stimulate appetite, normalize glucose levels, reduce blood lipids, relieve dyspepsia and was consumed as a digestive tonic and expectorant.
