    Traditional uses of Organic Skullcap

Skullcap is a native plant scattered across North America, from the Maritime provinces to Florida on the east side, and from British Columbia to New Mexico on the west side. There are 90 species in the genus, many of them native here. Its eastern cousin, the Scutellaria baicalensisis an important plant in the Chinese pharmacopoeia; used for over 2000 years, it has been extensively studied in recent decades.

Some skullcap plants have identical medicinal properties, but the S. lateriflora is the most medicinal and widely used North American species. In the 18th century, it was used to treat St. Vitus dancing.

It has also been used to treat epilepsy, convulsions, tremors, snakebites, insect bites and rabies, hence the colloquial name "mad dog weed". Skullcap was an official plant in the United States between 1863 and 1916, and can be found in many countries. National Formulary until 1947. Having arrived in England in 1850 S. lateriflora is listed in the 1983 edition of the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia.

Nowadays, there is growing interest in skullcap's hypotensive effect, as well as its tonic and calming effect in nervous conditions, and tensions linked to the heart and emotions. It is the plant of choice during pregnancy for hypertension, nervousness or insomnia, or for all chronic situations when you want to restore nervous health.

Skullcap is the plant of the heart, both physical and emotional.
