Why choose organic cotton tampons?

Women are often unaware that rayon and rayon blends are widely used in tampon manufacture. Rayon is commonly bleached with chlorine and is a fiber that absorbs menstrual flow very well and very quickly; however, it can also simultaneously dry out the mucous membrane that naturally protects the vagina.

What about toxic shock syndrome (TSS)?

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare but fatal disease caused by a particular type of bacteria that can generate toxins in the body. Symptoms of TSS are rapid and often severe. The results of a study published in "The Journal of Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics and Gynaecology" suggest that using 100% cotton tampons, instead of those containing rayon, may reduce the risk of staphylococcal toxic shock. The study looked at 20 tampon varieties, including Natracare's 100% cotton tampons, and came to the following conclusion: unlike other tampons, 100% cotton tampons do not produce the dangerous SCT toxins of the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium.
