For good germination, blue thistle requires cold stratification. Place seeds in a damp paper towel, refrigerate for 3 to 4 weeks, then sow indoors 4 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Or sow them directly in the garden in autumn or early spring. Plant in full sun, spacing plants 30 to 45 cm apart. Blue thistle prefers well-drained soil and tolerates dry conditions once established.
