Dame d'Onze Heures: Bach's comfort flower
Scientists may call it "star of Bethlehem", "ornithogale en ombelle" or "Ornithogalum umbellatum", but amateur botanists like to call it "la dame-d'onze-hours". Why do they call it that? Quite simply because the immaculately white flowers of this little spring plant only open when the sun is at its brightest. They close again at dusk or when it's raining. Another special feature is its harmonious, stable geometry: this is the only flower with six petals.
Common in Europe, and particularly in France, the umbellate ornithogale thrives particularly well in clay soils. It is often found in meadows and along roadsides, where it grows, tenderly cradled by the sun's rays. It can also be found as an ornamental plant in gardens, as its star-shaped flowers are perfect ornaments. It grows in umbels, which appear from May onwards. Each stem has between 5 and 15 flowers. This plant with its oviform bulb grows to between 10 and 30 cm tall, depending on the environment in which it grows. It thrives in cool, shady conditions, although sunlight encourages flowering.
