Himalayan balsam, giant balsam, granular impatiens, Himalayan impatiens... Behind all these names lies one and the same plant: Impatiens glandulifera. Native to Kashmir and Nepal, it was introduced to France in the 19th century: quick to grow and spread against all odds, it has adapted very well to the French environment. Perhaps even a little too well, as since the 20th century, this plant has been considered an "invasive" species...
But it's a beautiful plant nonetheless: look for it near watercourses, in full sun or in semi-dark areas, if you want to admire it. You'll recognize it by its impressive size - it can grow up to two meters high and around sixty centimeters wide - its serrated leaves and, above all, its superb flowers, which bloom from July to September. They come in a variety of shades: pink, pale mauve, red...
The "fruits" of this plant are very special: they form very long, striped capsules. When detached, they release numerous seeds at high speed several metres away, making Impatiens glandulifera a plant that spreads rapidly.
