Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; or if you have peptic ulcer disease, regional enteritis, or ulcerative colitis. Constipation, diarrhea, nausea, stomach upset and abdominal cramps may occur.
Iron may cause black stools, an effect that is not harmful. A severe allergic reaction to this product is rare; do not use if allergic to pork products.
Before using heme iron polyeptide, inform your pharmacist or physician if you are using methyldopa or other iron-containing products. Iron supplements may reduce the absorption of drugs such as tetracycline antibiotics, penicillamine, cefdinir, chloramphenicol, levothyroxine, levodopa, and quinolone antibiotics; therefore, doses of these drugs should be spaced as far apart as possible.
This product may interfere with certain laboratory tests (including stool blood tests), which may lead to false results; ensure that laboratory personnel and all physicians are aware that you are taking this product.
This product should not be taken if you have certain medical conditions. Inform your doctor or pharmacist before use in case of hemochromatosis, other types of anemia, stomach or intestinal problems, or repeated blood transfusions.
Keep out of reach of children. Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is one of the leading causes of fatal poisoning in children under 6. In the event of accidental overdose of this product, call a doctor or Poison Control Center immediately.
