Jardins de l'Écoumène's organic Deer Tongue lettuce is a very old variety from the United States. It's a unique lettuce in many ways, first and foremost because of its unusual, glossy green leaves, which are triangular and curved downwards. The leaves have a delicious nutty flavor that never turns bitter, and a soft, crunchy texture.
However, the plant doesn't form a nice round head, but something like a small, firm, tall and elongated, rather discreet head, and thick-ribbed leaves, which make it more akin to romaine lettuce. You can, however, pick the leaves as you go along and watch them grow back, like leaf lettuces.
Highly resistant to heat, it sets seed very late in the season and has excellent resistance to cold. It can therefore be grown from spring to autumn.
