Lettuce can be sown indoors and transplanted, or sown directly in the field. Sow the seeds and barely cover them with potting soil (1/4'') - they need light to germinate but will die if they dry out. Thin or transplant at 12" intervals for a head of lettuce.
Lettuce for mesclun can be sown more densely, preferably in rows for easier harvesting.
