    Mode of action :

Milk thistle's active ingredient, silymarin, stops liver cell degeneration processes and has antioxidant activity. Silymarin is made up of four flavonolignans: silybin, isosilybin, silychristin and silydianin.

Silymarin is 70% silybinin. Silymarin is a powerful inhibitor of cancer cell proliferation, reduces liver cell destruction and decreases inflammation.

It acts on parenchyma cell membranes and prevents poisons from penetrating them, thus preventing and treating liver damage. Milk thistle is a high-dose plant, as its solubility and absorption are low.

    Traditional uses :

Native to Asia Minor and southern Europe, but already present in northern Europe in the 16th century. Milk thistle has been used for over 2,000 years to treat liver ailments; its virtues are mentioned in the Bible, in the writings of Pliny the Elder and in medieval literature.

Legend has it that the white veins on its leaves are the stains left by the Virgin Mary's milk when she fell on milk thistle plants and rescued Jesus from Herod's persecution.

Milk thistle has always been a very popular plant in vegetable gardens, both as a medicinal plant and as a vegetable. Used in cooking since the early 19th century, the leaves were eaten in salads, the stems like asparagus and the roots like salsify. The flowers are eaten like artichokes, and the roasted seeds can even be made into a hot beverage.

Milk thistle became naturalized in Quebec and America in the late 19th century, with the arrival of settlers. Milk thistle is a plant whose action is focused on protecting the liver. It protects the liver against intoxicants and poisons, and is particularly effective in cases of poisoning caused by inedible fungi. It is also used to rebuild the livers of alcoholics and drug addicts, or when long-term medication has been taken.

There has been a great deal of medical research into this plant over the last 20 years, from animal tests to clinical studies. Preliminary results suggest a protective action of silymarin on kidney cells and a reduction in cancer cell proliferation in prostate cancer.
