Menthol has been used for a very long time. Archaeologists found its dried leaves in Egyptian pyramids dating back to the first millennium BC. It was frequently used by Hippocrates and Aristotle.
Its therapeutic effects derive mainly from its biochemical molecules: menthol and menthone. Menthol induces a sensation of cold by stimulating thermoreceptors, and this anesthetic effect removes pain. Menthone and menthol stimulate digestion and generate a decongestant effect.
