Start winter squash seedlings indoors 3 weeks before transplanting. Sow two seeds per cell or pot. Transplant on warm days and frost-free nights. Space plants 2' apart in the row and 5-6' between rows. Take care to handle the roots as little as possible when transplanting. Water abundantly after transplanting.
You can also sow the seeds directly in the field (same spacing as when transplanting) after the risk of frost, but there's a risk that some fruit won't mature before the first frost in autumn.
