Star Anise, or Badian, was discovered and introduced to Europe by Marco Polo on his return from his travels in the 13th and 14th centuries. The star-shaped fruit of the badian tree, it is picked green to be dried in the sun, turning reddish-brown in color. Well known for its aromatic properties, star anise is used in many pastries, spice blends, herbal teas and aniseed-flavored aperitifs (Anisette, Pastis, Ouzo or Sambuca). Star Anise essential oil is obtained by distilling the seeds.
