    Traditional uses

Skullcap is a native plant scattered across North America, from the Maritime provinces to Florida on the east side, and from British Columbia to New Mexico on the west side. There are 90 species in the genus, several are native here. Its eastern cousin, the Scutellaria baicalensis, is an important plant in Chinese pharmacopoeia; used for more than 2000 years, it has been widely studied in recent decades.

Some skullcaps have identical medicinal properties, but the S. lateriflora is the most medicinal and widely used North American species. It was given in the 18th century. to treat the dance of Saint-Vitus.

It has also been used in the treatment of epilepsy, convulsions, tremors, snake bites, insect stings and against rabies, hence the colloquial name “mad dog weed”. The skullcap was official in the United States between 1863 and 1916 and present in the National Formulary until 1947. Arriving in England in 1850, the S. lateriflora is listed in the 1983 edition of the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia.

Nowadays, we are more and more interested in the hypotensive effect of skullcap as well as its tonic and calming effect in nervous conditions, tensions linked to the heart, to emotions. It is the plant most indicated during pregnancy in cases of hypertension, nervousness or insomnia, or for all chronic situations when we want to restore your nervous health.

Skullcap is the plant of the heart, both physical and emotional.
