Folic acid (also known as folate or folacin) is an important member of the B vitamin complex. As folic acid is the vitamin most commonly deficient in the human diet, its supplementation is essential for maintaining good health.
Folic acid is widely recognized for its importance in fetal development. Many birth defects, including neural tube defects (including spina bifida), can be attributed to a lack of folic acid during pregnancy. It is recommended that all women of childbearing age take a folic acid supplement before conception, or at least very early in pregnancy, and continue to do so throughout the pregnancy.
Folic acid is also beneficial in reducing homocysteine levels in the body. High homocysteine levels have been identified as a factor in the development of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Homocysteine causes osteoarthritis by weakening blood vessel walls; osteoarthritis can lead to heart attack or stroke. Health First Folic Acid contains 1 mg of folic acid.
