The role of vitamin K2
Vitamin K2 is essential for strong bones. Vitamin K acts by regulating the body's metabolism of calcium, helping to direct it to the parts of the body where it is needed, such as the skeleton, and diverting it from
systems where it could have a negative effect, such as the arteries and cardiovascular system. There are two main forms of vitamin K2: MK-4 and MK-7. While both are effective in improving bone health, MK-7 is the natural form of vitamin K, the one used by the body. MK-7 is better absorbed and remains in the body longer, which means that its effective dose is much lower than that of MK-4.
Most Canadians get their vitamin K from green leafy vegetables. However, many foods supposedly rich in vitamin K turn out to be much less so than originally thought. To support bone health as it should be, Preferred Nutrition's vitamin K2 contains an optimal dose in its MK-7 form, which is more easily absorbed by the body.
