How to Improve the Bioavailability of Fat-Soluble Vitamins

The Mechanism: Why Fat-Soluble Vitamins Need Fat

Vitamins A, D, E and K dissolve in fats, not in water. To cross the intestinal wall and reach the bloodstream, they must follow the same path as dietary lipids.

Dietary fats arrive in the small intestine and stimulate the release of bile salts from the gallbladder.

These salts form structures called micelles, tiny aggregates in which fat-soluble vitamins dissolve. It is inside these micelles that the vitamins cross the enterocyte membrane, before being packaged into chylomicrons and transported through the lymph and then into the blood.

Without fat: no bile stimulation, no micelle formation, and very limited absorption. Some studies show that fat-soluble vitamin absorption without a lipid matrix is minimal, and even negligible for certain forms.

How Much Fat Is Needed?

A study on vitamin D showed that taking it with a fat-containing meal increased its absorption by 32% compared to a fasting intake.

For vitamins E and K, the effects of dietary fat on absorption are even more pronounced.

The practical rule: take your fat-soluble vitamins with the richest fat-containing meal of your day.

Not All Fats Are Equal

Long-Chain Fats (LCT): The Most Effective

Long-chain triglycerides, found in olive oil, avocados, nuts, fatty fish and eggs, are the most effective at stimulating micelle formation and optimizing the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

Practical examples: 1 tablespoon of olive oil with your vitamin D, a handful of nuts with your vitamin E, an egg or avocado with your vitamin K2 supplement.

MCT Fats: Less Effective for This Role

MCT oils are absorbed through a different pathway: directly into the portal vein, bypassing the lymphatic system.

They are less effective at stimulating micelle formation and are therefore not ideal for optimizing fat-soluble vitamin absorption. They can work in a pinch, but are not the ideal vehicle.

Gallbladder Health: The Forgotten Factor

The gallbladder is the key player in this process. Without adequate bile production, micelles do not form properly, even if you take your vitamins with quality fats.

The highest-risk profiles: people who have had a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), those suffering from irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel diseases, and anyone with rapid transit or chronic diarrhea episodes.

In these profiles, supplementation with bovine bile or conjugated bile acids can significantly improve fat-soluble vitamin absorption, independently of diet.

Dosage Form: An Often Overlooked Absorption Lever

A dry vitamin D3 tablet must first dissolve in the digestive tract, then the vitamin D molecules need to find a lipid environment to be absorbed. If the meal does not contain enough fat, absorption is compromised.

An oil-based softgel capsule already contains vitamin D3 dissolved in a carrier oil. The lipid matrix is integrated into the product itself, which improves absorption even in a less favorable dietary context.

The liposomal form goes one step further: vitamins are encapsulated in liposomes that mimic cell membranes and facilitate direct passage through the intestinal walls, with superior bioavailability compared to conventional forms, particularly documented in people with absorption difficulties.

Vitamin K2 (MK-7)

MK-7 form: longer half-life, superior bioavailability to MK-4. With a fatty meal. Often combined with D3 in an oil-based softgel.

Vitamin A

Preformed retinol is better absorbed than beta-carotene. Beta-carotene to active vitamin A conversion varies greatly between individuals.

Vitamin E

Choose natural form (d-alpha tocopherol) vs synthetic (dl-alpha). With unsaturated fats for optimal absorption.

Interactions That Reduce Absorption

  • Cholestyramine (a cholesterol-lowering medication) drastically reduces the absorption of all fat-soluble vitamins by binding bile acids.

  • Mineral oils (used as laxatives) form an impermeable layer that prevents fat-soluble vitamin absorption. Absolutely avoid taking them simultaneously.

  • A very low-fat diet (less than 15 g per day) can compromise absorption even with softgels.

  • Very high-dose vitamin E can interfere with vitamin K absorption.
