Three main processes are at work with brain aging.

First, the progressive decline in cerebral blood flow reduces the supply of oxygen and nutrients to neurons.

Second, the deterioration of nerve cell membranes slows signal transmission between neurons.

Third, the accumulation of oxidative stress and chronic low-grade inflammation accelerates cellular aging.

These mechanisms are often compounded by subclinical nutritional deficiencies, particularly in vitamin B12, folic acid, and omega-3s, which are especially common after 50. These deficiencies are reversible through supplementation and sometimes represent the primary cause of perceived cognitive decline.

Phosphatidylserine (PS): The Best-Documented Choice

Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid naturally present in the membranes of brain cells. With age, its concentration in the brain decreases, affecting the fluidity of neuronal membranes and communication between neurons.

It is one of the few cognitive supplements to have received a qualified health claim from the FDA in the United States.

Clinical trials show that daily supplementation of 300 mg for 8 to 12 weeks significantly improves short-term memory recall and executive function in people over 55 with age-related cognitive impairment.

The marine-derived form (with bound omega-3s) is considered more bioavailable and more effective at crossing the blood-brain barrier than the soy-derived version.

Omega-3 DHA: The Brain's Structural Nutrient

DHA accounts for nearly 40% of the polyunsaturated fatty acids in the brain. It is integrated into neuronal membranes and plays a fundamental structural role in their function.

Its concentration in the brain decreases with age, particularly in the absence of regular consumption of fatty fish.

For cognitive support, clinical protocols typically use 1 to 2 g of EPA+DHA per day, with a higher proportion of DHA for specific brain objectives.

Bacopa Monnieri: The Long-Term Memory Plant

Bacopa monnieri is a plant from Ayurvedic medicine whose effects on memory are among the best documented in herbal medicine. Its mechanism is twofold: it increases levels of acetylcholine (the neurotransmitter of memory and learning) while reducing the activity of acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that degrades it.

Double-blind clinical trials show measurable improvements in long-term memory and information processing speed after 8 to 12 weeks.

The key feature of bacopa: its effects are gradual and more pronounced on the consolidation of long-term memory than on immediate memory. Standard dose: 300 mg of standardized extract (55% bacosides) per day.

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus): The NGF Pathway

Lion's mane is a medicinal mushroom that contains hericenones and erinacines, compounds that stimulate the production of NGF (Nerve Growth Factor), a growth factor essential for neuronal survival and regeneration.

Preliminary human studies show improvements in mild cognitive function in older adults following several months of supplementation.

Research remains at a more preliminary stage than for phosphatidylserine, but the mechanisms are biologically sound and the data is accumulating rapidly.

Vitamins B12, B9 and B6: The Homocysteine Factor

Homocysteine is an amino acid whose accumulation in the blood is associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Its regulation depends directly on vitamins B12, B9 (folate), and B6.

Vitamin B12 deficiencies are particularly common after 50, as absorption of this vitamin decreases with age due to reduced stomach acid production.

A randomized controlled trial (the VITACOG study) published in PLOS One showed that B12, B9 and B6 supplementation in people with elevated homocysteine significantly slowed the rate of grey matter brain atrophy and improved certain cognitive measures.

The Case of Ginkgo Biloba: Honesty About the Evidence

Ginkgo biloba deserves a separate mention because it is very popular and the evidence is more mixed than commonly believed.

It improves cerebral microcirculation and has well-documented antioxidant properties. Studies show positive effects on certain aspects of cognition, particularly when combined with phosphatidylserine.

However, large-scale studies have not shown that ginkgo prevents dementia or improves memory in cognitively healthy adults over 55.

Its most justified role: as a supportive supplement for cerebral circulation, in combination with other activities, rather than as a primary memory supplement.

Precaution: ginkgo has antiplatelet properties and can interact with anticoagulants. Stop two weeks before any surgery.

How long before seeing results?

Phosphatidylserine shows measurable effects after 8 to 12 weeks. Bacopa requires similar patience, sometimes up to 3 months. Omega-3s act on a longer horizon (3 to 6 months for structural effects). B12 can improve certain symptoms more quickly if a deficiency was present.
