La biodiversité : jardins de l'Écoumène - La Boite à Grains

Les Jardins de l'Écoumène was born in 2001, in northern Lanaudière, from the desire of co-owners Guylaine St-Vincent and Jean-François Lévêque to offer quality organic vegetable seeds, while ensuring the survival of certain important and rare heritage lines. They are committed to preserving biodiversity by applying cultivation methods that respect the soil, life and natural cycles.

Permaculture precepts have guided them in the development of the gardens, and the design and construction of the company's buildings. They have developed their own solar-powered electrical grid to power greenhouses, bagging equipment, work areas, lighting and more.

Jardins de l'Écoumène organic seeds are offered to La Boite à Grains customers for many years. You can choose from a wide variety of vegetables, herbs and edible flowers.

Tips and tricks: Biodiversity - Jardins de l'Écoumène

We are delighted to offer you several new products this year, including :

  • The "Petit moineau" tomato: this tomato began to make a name for itself around 1950, when it was cultivated in the Châteauguay region. Barely larger than a 10-cent coin, this exceptional variety forms a bush that bears its first red fruit towards the end of July, continuing to produce until the first frost, and even longer if the plant is protected. These small, sweet-tasting fruits can be eaten like candy... health candy, needless to say! A single plant grows up to 1.5 m tall and can yield almost 4 kg of tomatoes the size of a large blueberry. We therefore recommend installing a teepee structure to support the branches, since a cage or stake is not enough.
  • Fortin" rutabaga: This heritage variety was selected by the Fortin family of Cap Saint-Ignace, Quebec. It is distinguished by its large, yellow-fleshed purple roots, which are resistant to insects and disease. Its mild flavor is highly prized by connoisseurs, who also appreciate its excellent winter storage qualities.

New products will be available at La Boite à Grains in early February.

 Enjoy biodiversity!
