Biodiversity: Ecoumen gardens

by La Boite à Grains 18 Sep 2017
La biodiversité : jardins de l'Écoumène - La Boite à Grains

The company Les Jardins de l'Écoumène was born in 2001, in the north of Lanaudière, from the desire of Guylaine St-Vincent and Jean-François Lévêque, the co-owners, to offer quality organic vegetable seeds, while ensuring the survival of certain important and rare heritage lines. They care to preserve biodiversity by putting into practice cultivation methods that respect the soil, life and natural cycles.

The precepts of permaculture guided them in the layout of the gardens and the design and construction of the company's buildings. They have developed their own electrical network based on solar energy to power greenhouses, bagging equipment, work areas, lighting, etc.

Organic seeds from Jardins de l’Écoumène are offered to customers of La Boite à Grains for several years. You can choose from a wide choice of varieties of vegetables, herbs and edible flowers.

Tips and advice: Biodiversity - Jardins de l’Écoumène

We are happy to offer you several new products this year such as:

  • The “Little Sparrow” tomato: it began to make headlines around 1950, when it was grown in the Châteauguay region. Barely larger than a 10 cent coin, this exceptional variety forms a bush which gives its first red fruits towards the end of July, continuing to produce until the first frost, and even more, if the plant is protected. These small fruits with a mild and sweet flavor are eaten like candy... healthy candy, of course! One plant grows up to 1.5 m in height and can produce nearly 4 kg of tomatoes the size of a large blueberry. It is therefore recommended to install a teepee structure to support the branches, as a cage or stake is not enough.
  • “Fortin” rutabaga: This heirloom variety was selected by the Fortin family of Cap Saint-Ignace in Quebec. It stands out by producing large purple roots with yellow flesh that are resistant to insects and diseases. Its mild flavor is very popular with enthusiasts who also appreciate its excellent preservation in storage during the winter.

New products will be available at La Boite à Grains from the beginning of February.

 Savor biodiversity!
