Kicking Horse is a story of passion, adventure and perseverance that began in the mid-1990s in British Columbia's Kootenay region. Elana Rosenfeld and Leo Johnson traveled the world to discover the art of roasting, and started their entrepreneurial adventure from the cellar of their home. By producing quality coffee and upholding the values of sharing, authenticity and ethics (100% of Kicking Horse coffee is certified organic and fair-trade), the company has steadily climbed the ladder to become a key player in Canada and beyond.

Leo Johnson, one of the two founders, told Kootenay Business Magazine in a 1998 interview: "I love the creative aspect of this job. The challenge is to keep improving and staying at the cutting edge.". His partner Elana Rosenfeld competed : "We believe in balance. We work hard, but we live in a beautiful region. We want people to love our coffee". Leo Johnson sums up the company's vision and mission in one sentence Kicking Horse : "Life is too short to drink the wrong cup of coffee".1
