Capsule Santé 104.7 FM: Natural Sweeteners
In her health column, the naturopath of La Boite à Grains Renée Jean talks about natural sweeteners, including monk fruit. They can replace sugar and have interesting health properties.
Xylitol and erythritol
Xylitol is a sweetening agent derived from a wood sugar. It is particularly used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Its caloric value is lower than that of white sugar. It is also used for dental health.
Erythritol is derived from a fermentation process found in fruit, beer and wine. In addition to having the same taste as white sugar, it has the same appearance.
Monk fruit
Monk fruit is a round-shaped lime from Southeast Asia. It's natural, calorie-free and doesn't affect blood sugar levels.
Monk fruit has many interesting properties: anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetes, anti-cancer.
