Frédéric Bisson - Host 104.7FM (00:19):

Every Monday, we welcome Lynn Goneau naturopath at La Boîte à Grains. And I'm feeling a bit targeted this week by the column, although it's for men 50 and over, and I'll be 49. So I'm still good. But let's say for men in their fifties, you may be feeling physiological, metabolic maybe even psychological changes.

Lynn Goneau - Naturopath of La Boite à Grains (00:45):

When a man gets older, the amount of vitamins and minerals he needs to be healthy is really going to be different than when he's younger. Frédéric for today, that's what we're going to talk about.

Frédéric Bisson - Host 104.7FM (00:56):

So there are four major health problems that will affect men more frequently when they reach their fifties. That's right.

Lynn Goneau - Naturopath of La Boite à Grains (01:02):

So we're talking about heart disease. It can be heart attacks, chest pains or even blockages in the arteries. We often hear about prostate cancer. Yes, it's the most common cancer in middle-aged men. Frédéric. Exactly. I see a lot of that with andropause.

Frédéric Bisson - Radio host 104.7FM (01:21):

I got this, I think.

Lynn Goneau - Naturopath of La Boite à Grains (01:23):

Okay, that's decreased muscle mass, decreased bone density, increased belly fat, decreased testosterone production and decreased libido.

Frédéric Bisson - Host 104.7FM (01:36):

The famous trio also other pressure, diabetes, bad cholesterol. Starting at age 50.

Lynn Goneau - Naturopath of La Boite à Grains (01:43):

here. Normally they go together. You can have one, but often the other two go with it.

Frédéric Bisson - Host 104.7FM (01:50):

What can we do to reduce risks?

Lynn Goneau - Naturopath of La Boite à Grains (01:52):

Obviously diet. That's my first recourse. Fish, oily fish that are rich in omega-3, trout, try to eat them at least twice a week. Next, fiber, fiber, fiber, and then there's a very special reason for eating fiber, Frédéric fiber. It helps delay the absorption of carbohydrates, the famous GLS that raises your glycemic index. If you eat fiber, it will reduce the spike it causes, and it can also help lower bad blood cholesterol. It sticks. So it helps. It plays a role in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. It's really important. And don't forget that it nourishes your microbiota.

Frédéric Bisson - Host 104.7FM (02:39):

Yes, that too. That's important too. Yes, it's not hard to find.

Lynn Goneau - Naturopath of La Boite à Grains (02:42):

No, it's really not difficult because you can have it in a loaf of bread or in whole grain cereals. There's a wide variety on the market, and then of course vegetables, lentils, because they're full of fibre.

Frédéric Bisson - Host 104.7FM (02:56):

I'm also doing this more often, instead of eating meat, it'll be, for example, a green lentil casserole with herbes de Provence. We also recommend eating foods rich in antioxidants. Such as?

Lynn Goneau - Naturopath of La Boite à Grains (03:11):

I love antioxidants, Frédéric, because that's what keeps us young. It's what's going to help with inflammation. It's what's going to help with so many things. It's easily found in dried fruit. You always eat a small amount in goji berries, cranberries, plums or raisins. It's also in almonds, walnuts, all nuts, Brazil nuts, in fact all nuts. Frédéric vegetables. All vegetables, broccoli, artichokes, especially the cabbage family, peppers, spinach, they're all full of antioxidants. Don't forget, Frédéric, that the vitamins and minerals your body needs are found in fruit and all vegetables.

Frédéric Bisson - Host 104.7FM (04:04):

A good trick to help us balance our blood sugar, among other things. That's what you were talking about.

Lynn Goneau - Naturopath of La Boite à Grains (04:09):

This is my favorite. Yes, it helps with blood sugar. It also helps with weight to keep a healthy weight. I always start the meal with either a soup or a salad or a combination of both. Then a salad, whatever. Then you continue your meal with your protein. So your vegetable protein or your animal protein, you can finish with your carbohydrates. All bread, pasta, rice, that would be at the end. Because there's a little protection you give yourself with your fiber at the beginning. Everything you eat after that will raise your glycemic index much more slowly.

Frédéric Bisson - Host 104.7FM (04:46):

I understand, it's like a little base. Yes, a little net to hold it all. Do you have any extras for us if we ever know or are perhaps a man approaching fifty. Yes.

Lynn Goneau - Naturopath of La Boite à Grains (04:55):

When you're having trouble, Frédéric, eating a truly balanced diet at every meal. And you may be lacking vitamins. And minerals. You can take a supplement. We say supplement because it's preferable in the diet, but you can make up for it. And there's one especially for men from Health First. It's called multivitamins for men aged 50 and over. Coming soon for you, Frédéric.

Frédéric Bisson - Host 104.7FM (05:17):

I can take it already. I think I'll, yes, it won't cause me any problems.

Frédéric Bisson - Host 104.7FM (05:23):

That's great. So Lynn to buy it, to see you, it's still our Tuesday appointment, tomorrow. Where is it?

Lynn Goneau - Naturopath of La Boite à Grains (05:30):

Every Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 5 a.m. at La Boîte à Grains on Gréber. It's a pleasure to chat with customers.

Frédéric Bisson - Host 104.7FM (05:36):
